Successful Leadership: 4 Skills Managers in an Industrial Business Need to Have
  • Opening Intro -

An industrial workplace can be fraught with dangers for both the manager and the employees.

In order for managers to succeed in the environment, they need to be born puzzle solvers.

-------------------------------------

Here are some other skills that are useful for managers in an industrial line of work.

Ability to Multitask

In an industrial environment, there are lots of tasks going on at once. This requires that you be able to focus on the task at hand. You also have to be aware of what is going on around you. There may also be pressing matters that are occurring at the same time. This means that you need to be able to take in all of the information and assign priority to them.

Many people mistake multitasking with doing lots of things at the same time. Multitasking is merely the ability to compartmentalize the information that you’re receiving in an effective manner.

An Eye for the Details

An effective manager is one that doesn’t let things slip through the cracks. Having the ability to pay attention to the details can mean the difference between meeting your goals.

One example of this in action is being able to spot when equipment needs to be repaired or modified. Lip seals, for example, are fairly common pieces of equipment in an industrial workplace. They often wear out due to the action of the machinery. Being able to spot that it needs to be changed can save the equipment from downtime.

Clear and Effective Communication

A manager in an industrial environment may also be part project manager. You have to be able to communicate not only with the employees in your area, but across departments. Having communication skills can make this task easier. You need to be able to relay your needs to other aspects of the business. There is also the need to be able to instruct employees in an effective manner. You want to keep them safe when there is machinery that could maim or kill them.

Capable of Making Decisions

You have to be able to make decisions with the information that is presented to you. This may mean that you have to make intuitive leaps about what the person is trying to say. Your problem solving skills may be put to the test on a daily basis. Having a thorough understanding of how everything functions may make you more effective at this task. In many cases, you may not have the luxury to take your time when making decisions. You have to be quick on the draw.

Being a manager in an industrial workplace is all about balance. You need to have the appropriate skill set so that you can be successful in the role.
