Obviously, you would be focusing on your strength. But this can also be a sure recipe for disaster.

Focus on the market

You may be awesome in your field, but this is not the way to go about it.

You are trying to build a business and make money out of it. This is possible only when you know your market and service it accordingly. Your friends may love your skills. This does not mean that the market will love it too.

In order to sustain and grow any market, it is important to know it first. This would mean knowing the target audience as well as the current market trends.

But this does not mean that your strengths are insignificant. It is just that your skills need to be tailored to the demands of your target audience.

Hence Java may be your skill but perhaps C++ can meet the requirements of your customer in a better way today. Since you are an expert programmer in one language, learning another would not be so difficult.

Smoothies may be healthy but perhaps your customers prefer ice-creams. So you may look for some kind of fusion food options to make healthier ice-cream options that would incorporate the goodness of smoothies.

Focus on the needs of the customer

There are times when you get so focused on what you can provide that you forget what the customer needs.

You may know Java but maybe the focus is not on software today. People may be looking at various hardware options now.

Smoothies may be your specialty but sprouts and salads may be the need of the hour.

The customer is always looking for solutions. The purpose of a business is to provide these to the customer. They are not interested in knowing the skills of a business. They are simply looking for solutions to their problems.

Focus on the customer

The customer is the king. You may be providing the best to the customer as per your understanding. But you need to know if you are succeeding in your efforts. This is possible only through the feedback received from your customer.

Hence the feedback from the customer is always welcome. It should be listened to and acted upon immediately. All this is not optional but the only mode of survival.
