The Different Uses for Excavators

The Different Uses for Excavators
  • Opening Intro -

One of the most iconic construction vehicles is a classic excavator.

Excavators are composed of a large rotating cabin with a hydraulic arm that has a scoop at the end.

-------------------------------------

We’ll be primarily focusing on the uses for standard crawler excavators, which can work on uneven terrain since they run on a track system instead of wheels. An excavator is a flexible machine that’s capable of many amazing things, and the different uses for excavators are many.

Forestry

The strength of an excavator’s powerful hydraulic arm is important when it comes to removing or moving forest features. Excavators don’t only need to be used for the destruction of forests or for the sake of construction projects either; they can move diseased trees or water source blockages to enable forest growth.

Controlling the environment in a way that prevents invasive species, pests, and diseases is extremely beneficial to an ecosystem.

There are also mulching attachments for excavators that can assist with any tree job. Mulching can be used to prevent forest fires or to clean up after they happen.

Landscaping

Moving and loosening earth in large quantities is a specialty of the excavator and can be especially useful during a landscaping project. Excavators can be used to create water features in a yard or be used to level the earth.

Depending on the size of the landscaping project, a mini excavator may need to be used instead of the average-sized excavator.

Construction Digging

Most commonly, an excavator is known for digging in preparation for construction projects. Excavators are best at rooting up the earth or destroying existing structures that may be obstructing the construction progress, such as old roads or dilapidated buildings.

There are a wide variety of construction projects that excavators can help with—big and small. When laying pipes and digging trenches or holes, they will clear the dirt and do the heavy lifting for you.

Don’t forget to install a trench liner once the excavator finishes to prevent damage to the trench through erosion or dangerous chemicals from seeping into the earth.

Demolition

Whenever a building is too dangerous or expensive to be salvaged, demolition is the last option. Demolition opens the entire plot of land so that you can start a construction project from the ground up. As the most destructive of the different uses for excavators, demolition should only be done by professionals.

other valuable tips:

Before you begin the demolition process, it’s important that the building is clear of anything hazardous that could explode or leak harmful substances. Also, be sure there aren’t any people in the demo site. While excavator demolition is more controlled than explosives or other tools, uncontrolled destruction can still occur.

Mining

Excavators are one of the most important tools used for mining. Typically, they will remain at the surface and scrape away at any ground-level minerals found in strip mining. Though standard excavators can be used for smaller mines, oftentimes strip mining is done by stories-tall, specialized dragline excavators.
