The Best Rules To Follow When Picking Locks

This skill could really be used under the right circumstances and could even save your life.

The unfortunate truth behind it, however, is that in most cases, people look down in shame at something like lock picking.

There must be a set of best rules to follow when picking locks so that you can stay within the legal bounds and not break the law.

Practice Discretion

Keeping things quiet and private should be the first and last thing on your list when using a lockpicking set to pick locks. If you can avoid the prying eyes of the public while you practice your hobby and skill, it will be a lot better in the long run.

Keeping a low profile means that you won’t be watched publicly, so it’s a good idea to not pick locks out in the open. Make sure you are keeping a good reputation among your peers and that no one suspects you of what you have going on.

The idea behind lock picking is to remain unseen and discrete in the first place, as it is something personal to you. It would be no different than inputting a password on your private computer or unlocking a keypad or a lock with a dial. Because it is personal to you, then you want to keep it your business.

Don’t Pick While in Use

As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to not practice picking on active locks. First, it would be nice to try your hand at a newer lock system so that you can have the confidence to pick something a little more updated.

But rest assured, before you know it, you will have the ability to get into just about any kind of lock you come across. By picking older locks, you risk damaging the integrity of the new lock and potentially making it unusable or locking it up indefinitely in the future, so it’s best to avoid that altogether.

Never Pick What’s Not Yours

This is invading in illegal territory and should be avoided at all costs. Now, if it’s a matter of life and death, then in situations like this, it might be wise just to get it over with. Picking strange locks could mean a lot of things, but mostly trouble. So, what we want to avoid is getting in trouble with the law because that’s not what lock picking is about.

This can be a really rewarding skill set if it’s practiced correctly. There is a negative undertone that comes with lock picking, but that shouldn’t keep you from trying your hand at it if it’s something that interests you. That’s why we practice the best rules to follow when picking locks to keep ourselves within the lines of legality.
