The Basics of Troubleshooting Your Industrial Control Panel

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask for Help

Asking for help should be your first step. The equipment manufacturer is an excellent place to start. These people understand your control panel. You should also talk with someone who understands the equipment the control panel is controlling.

This talking could lead you to someone who’s dealt with the same issue. This person could know how to fix it or point you to the right person who can help. Don’t waste too much dwelling on talking with the right person. If it’s not working, then move on to the next step.

Focus Efforts

Focus your efforts on the issue you’re trying to solve, and allow that problem to lead you to the solution. There are two questions to ask to help you out.

  • What are you trying to figure out?

Before doing anything, locate the dedicated power source powering the control panel. Typically, you’ll find it in a motor control center or an electrical power distribution panel. Once you’ve located the source, turn it off. Begin with the power circuits if you’re unsure where to start.

Locate the original manual and documentation you received when the company installed the control panel. If you lost your copy, contact the manufacturer to have them send another.

Tools are another excellent resource to use when troubleshooting your industrial control panel. You should start accumulating tools if you haven’t yet. A few items to get you started include:

  • Connectors
  • Wire cutters
  • An electrical multimeter
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Strippers

These will provide an adequate toolbox when you need to troubleshoot an issue. You can open it up and get to work on the problem.
