Conduct a Wobble Check
One of the first steps in properly maintaining your pallet racks is to always understand what kind of condition they are in. As with anything else, pallet racks can degrade over time, making them less effective load-bearing instruments. You must keep this in mind to ensure that your pallet racks remain useful to your operations throughout their entire lifespan. While there are many ways to check the quality of your pallet racks, one of the simplest tests is called a wobble check.
What’s a Wobble Check?
A wobble check involves simply pushing on any load-bearing beams on the pallet racking structure to see whether the structure moves in any way that it shouldn’t. In many cases, this movement is an indication that the bolts have loosened or that there is heavy rust somewhere within the structure. This is also an essential step to perform when properly organizing your pallets—racks that are too close to one another and are wobbly can lead to an unsafe situation.
Check for Degradation and Rust
Besides the wobble check, properly maintaining your pallet racks means checking for any degradation or rust that may have developed. In general, it’s best to hire an inspector who can accurately assess problem areas within your pallet racking system. It is important to note that even though degradation or rust can compromise the structure of the pallet racks, it is quite easy to fix these problems.
Because of the modular structure of pallet racking systems, you can easily replace any beams, bolts, or brackets that have rusted. Pallet racks are also very visible to those on the ground, so all in all, it should be easy for you to check whether there is any degradation or rust on your pallet racks.
Ensure Your Warehouse Is Up to Code
