Companies worldwide started selling products and services online, as ecommerce created a huge “boom” in the trading industry. Creating online shops was a smart move for companies as they were able to sell products to customers from every corner of the world, because the internet has no boundaries whatsoever.
Amazon of the East
Alibaba is the largest ecommerce company in China and one of the largest in the world, with 528 million active users every month. The multinational conglomerate which specializes in retailing, internet, AI, and technology, was founded in 1999 by 18 founders led by Jack Ma.
In 2010, Alibaba launched AliExpress, their subsidiary B2C platform intended to market Chinese products to foreigners at low prices. These days, AliExpress’ influence is widespread across Europe, and it is starting to gain popularity in the United States as well.
There is a constant growth of active consumers across Alibaba. In 2013 there were 198 million users, 294 million in 2014, 377 million in 2015, 435 million in 2016 and there were 470 million users in the past year. Most of the customers come from China 27.3%, USA 11.1%, India 6.0%, Japan 3.5% and the UK 2.8%.
Through the years Alibaba made some serious investments and acquisitions. They bought shares or whole companies with HiChina, One-Touch, Yahoo, UCWeb, ChinaVision, among the most famous ones. The biggest investments they made were in the Taobao rural operations centers, AutoNavi, Alibaba Entrepreneurs Funds, Sun Art Retail, and Intime.
Alibaba also finances charities and foundations with the Alibaba Foundation having a sizeable fund dedicated to social causes in 2011, and Alibaba Poverty Relief fund announced in 2017.
