Personal Grooming
Employees represent the company image. Everyone should be held to a high standard of personal grooming that customers expect to work with. This includes neat clothing or company uniform, tidy hair, general cleanliness, lack of body odor, and dental hygiene.
An employee should appear to be prepared to deal personably with the public by maintaining an attractive, neat appearance overall.
Company Dress Code
All employees should be expected to conform to the company dress code. If there is not a clearly defined dress code in print, one should be developed and circulated so everyone knows how to dress.
Guidelines should cover all aspects of physical appearance from hair and fingernails, if included, as well as uniform or style of clothing to wear as well as examples of what is not appropriate.
Some companies include statements about hair length or styles, jewelry, cosmetics, and body art such as visible tattoos and piercings. Shoes may be another item to be addressed. Everyone should know what to wear to work as well as what is considered to be unacceptable.
Bodily Infestations
Any employee who reports the existence of physical pest infestations or who is reported with such by other employees or customers should be sent home until the problem has been completely resolved. Pest problems include but are not necessarily limited to body lice, scabies, ringworm, or bedbugs.
Some, like lice or bedbugs, can be spread around the company or picked up by other employees or customers. When noted, a professional pest control company should be contacted and scheduled to visit the worksite for a comprehensive evaluation of the premises. If pests are noted, the workplace will have to be treated. The presence of any sort of pests of this type is bad for business and may cause the company to fail.
How we dress at work represents our personal and professional statement of who we are, both individually and as a company employee. To maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness, as well as ensure that employees aptly represent the company they work for, a clear-cut dress code and prompt responses to concerns or violations is necessary.
