Being aware of the most common safety hazards in warehouses will allow you to identify potentially harmful situations early and formulate a response plan before events happen.
Dangers of Warehouse Vehicles
Among the most significant threats to warehouse safety are forklifts and other similar vehicles. Due to their large size and speed, a collision between a forklift and a pallet rack has the potential to cause significant damage to inventory and employees alike.
Any damage to the support structure runs the risk of collapse, and accidents with forklifts account for some of the most significant harm to rack systems.
-
Visibility
One of the major causes of forklift collisions is poor visibility. If the operator cannot see where the vehicle ends and the rack begins, they’re far more likely to make contact.
You can mitigate low visibility by installing mirrors around corners or finding ways to increase the amount of light in any areas with poor lighting.
Repetitive Motion
Some workers may need to perform specific motions to complete their job, but what their work requires of them can cause long-term injury.
When the human body must perform the same motion over a long period of time, they’ll overuse and abuse their muscles, causing them to break down. Don’t let this happen!
-
Breaks From the Repetition
Encourage employees to take occasional breaks from their work to give their used muscles some rest. These quick five-minute breaks go a long way in eliminating the threat of injuries due to repetitive motion.
Remind your employees to take breaks from time to time.
Outbreak of Fire
Your facility is vulnerable to fire from several sources, whether it’s the potential of combustible inventorying igniting, space heaters left unattended, exposed electrical wiring short-circuiting, or even arson.
It’s difficult to prepare for the dangers of a fire, but you must protect employees with a proper response, such as an escape plan or methods to snuff out fires before they spread.
-
Sufficient Alarm System
One of the most reliable solutions to fire is to ensure there’s enough flue space within your pallet racks. A fire that starts on one of your shelves can burn out of control without flue space.
If there’s adequate space, however, the flames and hot air will have a free path upward to set off the alarms and sprinkler systems.

Have a Plan Beforehand
For the safety of your employees, you must have a response ready in the event that someone becomes injured or a violent event occurs. A plan will allow everyone to remain calm and give them the knowledge of what they need to do to exit the situation safely.
