CNC machines offer manufacturing companies the ability to craft parts with precision and a quick turnaround time. However, as much as this equipment helps increase production efficiency, it can set entire plants back in their goals and quotas when technical issues arise. To keep operations up and running, it’s valuable to understand the different kinds of issues with CNC machines.

Incorrect Tools or Settings

Naturally, choosing the wrong tool for the material you’re working with would cause issues for your project. If a tooltip becomes damaged or dulled or your cutting coolant has not been maintained, it can cause similar problems, such as using the right tool with the wrong settings.

If you notice scarring, cutting marks, or rough or raised edges, your company’s first step should be to check the tools of your machine.

Programming Issues

CNC machines are computer-controlled, and this fact can be intimidating to those without a background in programming. Issues in the coding or the software can be hard to diagnose and harder to correct for new operators.

If you identify an issue in your machine’s program, check to see if there are any missing headers or commands in the program or insufficient documentation. When in doubt, refer to your machine’s user manual.

Problems With Clamping

In order for a machine to properly shape a part, the material has to be firmly held in place. If it’s not, you may be facing issues with the fixtures or chuck of your machine. Several factors may be at play with a clamping issue. Beyond simple issues in positioning, hydraulic pump pressures, faulty footswitches, inadequate lubricant may contribute to improper gripping.


Overheating is a real risk in any manufacturing scenario where machinery is used for extended periods without rest. The same is true in CNC machining, and extreme temperatures can cause several different issues with CNC machines that can damage both the product and the machine.

As with clamping issues, insufficient lubrication can contribute to this issue. An accumulation of dirt, grime, and debris from the machining process (such as metal shavings) may also be a factor in overheating. So, performing regular machine cleaning is essential to keep the machinery running smoothly.

Power Supply Issues

CNC machinery draws an extensive amount of power, as much as one Kilowatt hour, or 1000 watts per hour. Because of this, a lack of sufficient power often contributes to CNC issues. Check to make sure the voltage and input are correct.

There may also be an issue with the machine itself, such as the circuit breaker. In this case, get a professional to examine the machine itself and advise you on any CNC machine parts you may need to invest in.
