    If there is one thing that costs companies a significant amount of money, it's a high employee turnover rate.


Hiring a new employee costs companies significantly more than retaining an old one, between the cost of posting and advertising the position and the time lost from having to train the new employee. The best way to keep employees around is to find ways to improve employee morale.

Monitor Workload

Working hard is to be expected at any job.  However, there is something to be said about making sure that the workload is equitably distributed across a workforce.

If an employee feels that they are being unfairly singled out to do more work than co-workers in the same position, it can breed resentment toward management. Or if an employee is assigned more work than can be reasonably accomplished in a shift, they may feel discouraged and frustrated.

It’s important to regularly review the amount of work assigned to every employee to ensure equality. Along with this, regularly discuss with employees how they feel about their workload.

Encourage transparency. It will not help the company if employees feel compelled to say they can accomplish a task that they can’t.

Improve Safety

Feeling unsafe at work can be a great detractor to employee morale. The following areas are where employee safety can be improved. 


One of the biggest safety concerns for many employees is the risk of exposure to COVID-19. This risk can be circumvented by continuing to allow employees to work from home.

But for stores, restaurants, and other businesses that require being in a facility, be sure that increased cleaning and social distance practices are strictly observed. Be transparent with workers about steps you are taking to ensure their health and safety and encourage them to stay home if unwell.

Work Conditions

For other worksites, safety concerns are related more to the nature of the work. This is especially true of businesses that involve physical labor such as construction sites, warehouses, and factories.

To prevent workplace accidents, take the following measures: 

  • Keep facilities clean
  • Perform regular machinery maintenance
  • Provide continued training for machine operators
  • Improve communication
  • Make sure facilities have necessary equipment

Employee Culture

At times it is not the conditions that make workers feel unsafe, but other employees. Be sure that employees feel open to speak to managers or other higher-ups about concerns they may have about the actions of others that make them feel uncomfortable. Be sure to encourage transparency among employees themselves.

Express Appreciation

One of the simplest ways to make someone feel that their job is worthwhile is to say thank you. And yet, this is one of the more unutilized ways of improving employee morale.

This can be a grand gesture like a party or a simple, intentional comment to an employee after a job well done. Because at the end of the day, no business can function without its workforce.
