However, there is more to being a driver than just driving. You’ll also need to be prepared to handle whatever the road may throw your way. In addition to your cargo securement and load bars, there is quite a bit of important equipment every new truck driver needs.
Hygiene Items
Just because you’ll be spending your time on the open road doesn’t mean you should neglect taking care of yourself. You’ll want to have a bag stocked with toiletries ready to go for when you make your stops.
Some of the most important items to include in your toiletry bag are:
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Soap
- Shampoo and conditioner
Flashlight
Every good truck driver has a quality LED flashlight at the ready for emergencies. You’ll usually need this if you need to get out of your truck for whatever reason at night.
Whether you’re checking on the engine, checking tire pressure, or any other roadside emergency, you’ll be glad you brought a flashlight with you.
Work Gloves
The longer you drive, the more you’ll realize how important your gloves are. You’ll also quickly realize how fast you go through gloves by wearing them out.
Rather than waste money on gloves over and over again, get yourself some high-quality leather gloves that you can rely on to not give out too quickly.
First-Aid Kit
Even though a company will often provide a first-aid kit, you want to be really sure you know everything that goes inside of it. The last thing you want is to actually need a first-aid kit and then find out the one provided doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for.
Emergency Kit
Although an emergency kit is an important piece of equipment every new truck driver needs, you’ll hopefully never even need to use it. However, it is crucial that you still have one just in case. An emergency kit should be filled with things you might need should you get stranded somewhere for some time. Some items to include are:
- Batteries
- Flares
- Jumper cables
- A window deicer
- Extra clothes
- A warm coat
- Bottled water and canned food
Window Mount for Your Phone
Safety should be your top priority while out on the road. To avoid the habit of looking away from the road to check your phone for maps or messages from your company, buy a window mount for your phone so that it stays in view without obstructing your focus.
